North River Terminal

The North River Terminal is the main and the biggest building on the bank of the Moscow Canal. River vessels could have reached five seas via the Canal. The terminal area is more than 5000 sqm. The terminal building was built at the same time as the Canal itself was dug out in 1933-1937. Today it is an architectural monument of regional significance.

The building looks like the vessel: three tiers of open terraces remind decks, and the central spire reminds the pipe. The terminal was used by citizens not only for transport needs but also for rest. It was built by prisoners of a labour camp that was in the custody of NKVD. That is why the archives were unavailable for long time.
